Fire Extinguishers are an effective tool when fighting fires, if used properly. You don't need to be a firefighter to know how to use one, you just need to know PASS.
PASS, stands for Pull, Aim, Squeeze and Sweep.
P: Pull out the safety pin on the handle of the extinguisher.
A: Aim the nozzle in the direction of the fire, specifically near the base/what is burning.
S: Squeeze the handle to discharge the extinguisher.
S: Slowly move the extinguisher side to side to ensure you are hitting as much fire as possible.
You must remember that extinguishers only last a few minutes, it will extinguish small fires but may be ineffective against larger fires. You MUST call 9-1-1 if there is a fire in your home.
On every extinguisher, there is a small gauge near the handle, you will notice that it is mostly red with a small green section. The needle must be in that green section. If it is not, you must have your extinguisher serviced or replace.
Keep extinguishers near your stove, appliances and in your garage.
